How we document storm damage

Each type of storm leaves different evidence, so we document each one differently:

• Hail: slope by slope, with test squares, plus dents in gutters, downspouts, vents and AC fins that show the size and direction of the hail.
• Wind: creased, torn or missing tabs. A tab that lifts but is still intact isn't wind damage.
• Ice storms: limb impacts, documented on their own.

We tie the date of loss to National Weather Service storm records. When the insurer's estimate misses something, our supplement lists each item (drip edge, starter, ridge cap, pipe boots, decking) with photos and code references, not a lump sum.

What it costs you, and what waiting costs

Your cost is usually your wind and hail deductible, often 1–2% of your insured value, plus any depreciation your policy doesn't pay back if the roof is covered at actual cash value (Oklahoma Insurance Department).

Waiting is what gets expensive. Many Oklahoma policies limit the time to sue to one year from the date of loss (OID), and a hidden leak can turn a roof claim into an interior claim.

When a claim is the wrong call

• The damage is cosmetic only and your policy excludes cosmetic damage.
• The covered loss is below or close to your deductible.
• The "damage" is age-related blistering or granule loss. Blisters alone don't prove hail.
